Thanet Roadrunners AC The John Flitch Memorial Mountain Bike Duathlon SUNDAY 15th JANUARY 2017, 10.30am PLEASE NOTE: HELMETS ARE COMPULSORY FOR THIS RACE Dear Athlete Thank you for entering the Thanet Roadrunners Mountain Bike Duathlon race. The race will start at 10.30am and includes approximately 2.5 miles road run, 6 miles cross country mountain/cycle cross bike ride and 4.5 miles cross country run. The course is suitable for spikes or fell shoes and has some water and dykes to cross.cycle cross bikes can be used, THERE ARE LIMTED CHANGING AND SHOWER FACILITIES AT RACE HQ. THE COUNCIL HAVE ASKED TO REMIND ATHLETES NOT TO RINSE THEIR MUDDY KIT IN THESINK OF THE PUBLIC TOILETS IN MINNIS BAY CAR PARK AS THEY WILL BLOCK THE DRAINS. THANK YOU. REGISTRATION, START & FINISH Please register and collect your timing chip and race number if necessary from Minnis Bay Sailing Club in the car park (Birchington, Kent, CT7 9QP). Please wear suitable clothing for the time of year as it can be VERY COLD in the exposed areas of the course. There is ample car parking in the car park or along the sea front several minutes walk from HQ. There are public conveniences and a snack bar/restaurant and pub on the site. The start area is adjacent to the car park/café site at Minnis Bay, Birchington, on the main seafront at Birchington. THE ROUTE The course has been measured by an Ordnance Survey map and are approximate. It is mainly a flat, hard course over farmland, farm roads and some seaside promenade. The course follows most of last year’s route. Please ensure you cross the timing mats, or your race time will not be recorded. 1st section - road run 2.5 miles on the promenade 2nd section – 6mile cross country bike ride one lap 6 miles on the bike – ROAD BIKES ARE NOT SUITABLE ON THIS COURSE. HELMETS MUST BE WORN - NO HELMET NO RACE After mildly flat grass for one mile, you will come onto the farmland part of the course. This will be one lap. You must dismount and run with your bike to the changeover area. Teams will change over at the end of this area. . YOU WILL NEED TO GO TO THE END OF THE CHANGEOVER AREA TO REGISTER YOUR TIME IF YOU WISH TO PULL OUT AFTER THE BIKE SECTION. IF YOU DO NOT, YOUR TIME WILL NOT BE RECORDED.AND HAND YOUR CHIP IN , 3rd section – cross country run - 4.5 miles This will be over a shorter route than the bike section, but with a little variation of the ditches, dykes and small hills. This is one lap only. ALL COMPETITORS MUST START THE RUN BY 2HRS OR THEY W ILL BE WITHDRAWN FROM THE RACE. PLEASE OBEY INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY THE MARSHALS AT ALL TIMES - THE COURSE IS NOT CLOSED TO TRAFFIC. THE FINISH Please ensure you cross the timing mat at the finishing line to record your race time and position. ANY PERSON FAILING TO DISPLAY A NUMBER MAY FORFEIT ANY PRIZE HE OR SHE MAY BE ENTITLED TO. PLEASE WEAR YOUR NUMBERS ON THE FRONT OF YOUR CLOTHING AND ONE ON YOUR BIKE COURSE CONTROL AND MEDICAL AID Margate Ambulance and Thanet Raynet, who are very experienced in this type of event. In the interest of safety please take any advice they may give you. TEAMS Teams are issued with two duplicate numbers, one for the bike and one for the run. AWARDS Those awards that can be presented will be presented as soon as possible after the race. . All finishers receive a goody bag and Memento , and there will also be awards for 1st 2nd & 3rd male and female; 1st Male V40, V50, V60, V70; 1st Female V35, V45, V55, LV65. Do please try to smile, even if you don’t feel like it…. DIRECTIONS From London take the M2 and then the A299 (follow Margate signs). At St Nicholas roundabout take the A28 to Margate. On reaching Birchington Square (mini roundabout) turn left down Station Road and follow the yellow Thanet Roadrunners Race signs to Minnis Bay. As you reach the seafront turn left and proceed to the car park at the end behind the Minnis Café/Bar.
